Hopeless

Eleonore St-Laurent (30) is a lawyer who fights injustice wherever she sees it. Daughter of a judge and a teacher in social work, she has convictions and a propensity to think outside the box that allow her to make things happen, for the better or worst. When she meets Jacob Gravel-Duquette (38), a kidult and investigative journalist, she finds the right fit for her. They push each other outside their comfort zone, attract each other, confront each other, admire each other, challenge each other. In short, there is a spark between them.

After reading an article by Jacob on Rosena, a Haitian victim of domestic violence who is trying to obtain asylum in Canada, Eleonore decides to represent the woman in her quest. The case looks straightforward, but a strategic error with the Immigration Commissioner and various events jeopardize her plans. Rosena goes from exemplary candidate to persona non grata. When the violent ex-spouse smuggles across the Canadian border and teams up with criminals to pay off his debt, the story takes an unpredictable turn. Eleonore invests body and soul in the case, exposing herself to danger. Meanwhile, Jacob investigates a possible voluntary euthanasia which occurred in the intensive care unit of a hospital. The more he digs, the more he discovers a long series of events that brought a construction worker to become a state-sponsored junkie who has fallen into the cracks of a deficient health system. He then uncovers an obscure story of an alleged sexual assault committed in a foster home. He will become involved in the fight to clear the reputation of the foster mother and rebuild a life shattered by the dysfunctional and opaque youth protection system.

In addition to fight injustice on behalf of multiple rebels, rightly or not, Eleonore and Jacob find themselves in the dock and must defend themselves. The Bar is opening an investigation into the lawyer who allegedly used sums of money that were placed in a trust to help a client. She also must deal with Esteban Paquet, a slimy client with conspiratorial tendencies. Jacob meets an old flame with whom it ended in a nasty breakup. What seems like an impromptu encounter is the first step of a skillfully orchestrated revenge plan to dismiss his credibility and morals. His relationship with Eleonore will be severely tested.
